It's Your Device!
We believe that you should truly own your device
We believe that if you buy a device, it should be yours, and yours only. The device should work as advertised, no matter how much software is needed to run it, and who runs or maintains that software infrastructure. This holds especially true for connected devices, or what is often referred to as the Internet of Things (IoT), where many companies use legal loop holes to "license" (as opposed to sell) a device (or its software), effectively stripping users of the ownership rights they might reasonably expect to have.
We pledge that if you buy one of our devices, it is truly yours to use, sell, lend, repair, modify, examines, or tinker with.
We especially pledge not to pursue, or threaten, any legal action against anyone who repairs, modifies, examines, or tinkers with our device, or who shares documentation of doing so.
This pledge is a work in progress that will evolve over time. We encourage all companies to take this pledge and speak publicly about it.
The pledge is inspired by our work on the Trustable Technology mark, our trustmark for IoT, the highly recommended The End of Ownership by Aaron Perzanowski and Jason Schultz, as well as the tireless activism for digital consumer rights that Cory Doctorow and others keep up every day. Thank you, Cory!
